Type Certificate File Retention

How long are the original Approved Type Certificate application documents (drawings, etc) for an aircraft's certification kept by the FAA?

ANSWER: The Type Certificate (TC) application data is kept for as long as the TC is active. In other words as long as there are aircraft still flying that were built to that standard. Even though the original manufacturer may have gone out of business, the TC and associated data is still kept on file.
